Variable Spaced Cutter 14 Teeth

  • Variable Spaced Cutter Blade
  • 14 teeth
  • Due to the accuracy of the spacings and the speed with which the test can be conducted, it is the preferred tool for use in this test except when evaluations must be made on coatings applied to surfaces which are neither flat or relatively smooth. Under these adverse conditions a single razor blade type cutter is often desirable under method A of ASTM.

Features

  • The Multiple Tip Blade Cutters for the Paint Adhesion Test Kit are specially designed to provide optimum results
  • Produced to very close tolerances
  • Black oxide coating (bluing) prevents rusting
  • Handle mounting holes do not go all the way through the cutter, which prevents the cutter from being improperly secured in the handle as the holes must face the securing set screws
  • An additional last step in the production process provides essentially zero tolerance on blade length. The blade cutters are first produced to ensure a normal cut, which is then followed by a fine lateral honing which slightly modifies the teeth. There are Several Advantages:
    • The teeth are stronger and less subject to damage
    • There is a cleaner edge cut where the coating interfaces with the supporting base
    • Cutter life is increased
    • The tolerance on tip length is greatly improved permitting lower pressure to be used on the cutter and avoiding gouging of the supporting base with a long tip

    Variable Spaced Blade (12599)
The following table shows the segment area in square mm for each of the segments in the variable spaced multi-tooth crosshatch pattern. The variable spaced multiple tooth cutter has 14 teeth providing 13 spaces between the teeth ranging from 0.46 mm to 2.58 mm. This spacing provides segment areas ranging from 0.21 square mm to 6.66 square mm.

More Information

Cutter Blades for Flat Surfaces - As general guide for coatings having a dry film thickness up to and including 2.0 mils (50 µm) space the cuts 1 mm apart and make eleven cuts (12603) unless otherwise agreed upon. For coatings having a dry film thickness between 2.0 mils (50 µm) and 5 mils (125 µm), space the cuts 2 mm apart and make six cuts (12610) unless otherwise agreed upon. For coatings having a thickness greater than 5 mils (125 µm) space the cuts 5.0 mm apart and make 5 cuts (12633) unless otherwise agreed upon.

Radius Cutter Blades - Multi-tooth adhesion cutters available to date may be used only on material applied to a flat surface. There have been numerous requests, however, for adhesion cutters for use on such surfaces such as pipe. The uniform 1 mm six tooth cutter is now available for use on such surfaces where the radius of curvature is no less than 0.75 inches. This special cutter for materials applied to simple curved surfaces is produced from a modified standard multi-tooth cutter. The rake angle (the angle of the tooth tip to the back of the cutter) is accurately known. Therefore, by removing a portion of the front surface of the cutter, the tooth is shortened by a known amount. Since the shortening of the tooth is proportional to the thickness of cutter removed, the cutter may be produced to work on any given radius of curvature above a practical limit of 0.75 inches. The cutter for curved surfaces is mounted in the same size and style of hand as all other GARDCO multi-tooth adhesion cutters.
